PROJECT OUTLINE
The Redleaf Group Heritage team was engaged by Qbuild to conduct cultural heritage field assessments in Birdsville QLD as part of a housing development. The field survey was conducted on site, which was adjacent to a Queensland Heritage Place, and had revealed numerous amounts of historical artefacts, including glass bottles, metal buttons and ammunition shells. Redleaf completed a Notification of Discovery for the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) as per state legislation to determine further actions.
KEY TASKS
- Conducted desktop assessments to determined potential impacts on Aboriginal and Non-Indigenous cultural heritage through database and register searches, as well as providing categorisations of risks to heritage and further recommendations for site management
- An on-site assessment involving GIS mapping, photography and artefact recording
- Provided further recommendations and advice in line with local and state legislation for the management and notification of archaeological discoveries and for works in or nearby listed heritage places
- Formal notification of discovery of artefacts to the DETSI under section 89 of the Queensland Heritage Act 1992
