Redleaf Group was commissioned by Lockyer Valley Regional Council to conduct a Cultural Heritage and Native Title Duty of Care Assessment for the Grantham Township planning area. The multidisciplinary investigation combined desktop research, statutory heritage register/database searches, comprehensive field survey, risk categorization, and recommendations for management and compliance. The assessment covered Aboriginal and non-Indigenous cultural heritage findings, risk mapping, legislative assessment (Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003, Queensland Heritage Act 1992, Native Title Act 1993), and protocols for impact mitigation that will guide works in historically and culturally sensitive areas.

Redleaf Group was engaged by RMA Engineers to conduct a detailed cultural heritage assessment of the Charlton Stone Culvert, constructed ca. 1860s, beneath a decommissioned railway embankment at Charlton, Queensland. The assessment was performed in line with the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 and the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter (2013) and included onsite inspections, structural and condition analysis, comparative heritage evaluation, and legislative compliance review. The stone culvert is a rare and intact example of early railway infrastructure, comprising bluestone blocks, brick arch roof, and convict-picked sandstone finishes, possibly associated with Queensland’s first chief railway engineer, Abraham Fitzgibbon.

In March 2024, flood recovery excavation works on Petie Road, Anduramba revealed a subsurface alignment of timber logs, initially interpreted as refuse but later assessed as a probable historic corduroy roadway or timber bridge structure. The discovery was made approximately 1.5 meters below the surface, with associated artefacts including remnants of a steam boiler chimney. The site, measuring 20m x 14m adjacent to an active road corridor, presented archaeological potential requiring formal notification under section 89 of the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. Excavation ceased and Redleaf Group was engaged to record and report the find.

The assessment addressed Aboriginal and non-Indigenous heritage risk and provided a compliance pathway consistent with relevant legislative obligations.

The area has a rich Indigenous and pastoral heritage, with multiple artefact scatters, remnant mature trees, historic bridge footprints, and a child’s grave identified.
